Sing for the laughter, sing for the tear. Sing with me just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good lord will take you away~ Aerosmith
For day 20 of the June 1-30 challenge, found here, we’re to say if we had 20 minutes to talk to someone, dead or alive, who would that be? What would we say? This is a piece of cake to me. I’ve written before about the loss of my father (Lost loved ones.) and the void it left in my life.
Even so, every time I talk to my brother I realize he had even less than I did. Less time, less memories, less of him. My father, who was a doctor, developed cancer in the 1970s, when no one really knew what cancer was. It was and remains a great tragedy of my life. We (my brother and I) have often wondered how differently our lives would have turned out were our father to have lived. He didn’t get to walk me down the aisle, or see my brother’s wife. He never got to hold a grandchild, because he barely got to hold his own child. He never got to see his grandchild, my firstborn son, carry his name. Although, were he alive, he wouldn’t have had to carry his name. There is so much I would want to tell him and there is no way 20 minutes would be enough. In the end though, I would like to believe, I would tell him I love him very much and we all miss him terribly, but my brother deserves the other 19 minutes.
Or so I would hope. But I’ll see you in my dreams…..

The what-ifs are difficult because like you said would we be the people we are if a major life event changed or are we destined to be who we are?

True! My brother says that he thinks we’d probably be close to where we are now in many ways. Who knows! What-if’s do no one any good really.

You have talked to highly of your Dad. I can feel the love you have for him. Your concern that your brother have more time is very touching. I wish you both could have had more.

It was warmth reading the phrase: “my brother deserves the other 19 minutes”.
