For day 9 of the June 1-30 challenge we are to write a story about or talk about going the whole 9 yards. Going the whole 9 yards is a phrase which indicates the person who “went” the 9 yards completed a task or something that was very difficult and/or dangerous. As I’m terrified of heights and a pretty big chicken, dangerous is out of the question. Difficult, however, I can do and all too well.

Sounds about right!

There have been a lot of things in my life that have been difficult, just like I’m sure many of you have the same. When I got divorced at 24, I decided to go back to school. Originally, I wanted to graduate early and go to college, but I would have only been 16 and my mother would not let me. I decided I wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps and become a doctor. I originally was pre-med, but I decided to get my BPS in Sociology and Health Science. I then moved to Chicago and intended to go to PA (Physician Assistant) school there. However, upon delivery of my 11 year old, I broke my pelvis. You can find my story under Stuck in Reverse parts 1, 2, and 3. In any case, after that happened, going through rotations, moving patients, etc, just wasn’t in the cards. After a long talk with my doctor, I decided to change course. I sat down and thought and decided that if I couldn’t do ER medicine, what would I do? And I decided that was Psychology. It’s actually awesome that I came to this conclusion because I love it. I love it so much.

I see…. therapy in your future!

The human mind is endlessly fascinating. I went back to school and got my MS in Psychology. I began writing a book and I’m working on my PsyD in Psychology. I’ve also recently begun a business (Global Media Mavens (aka Cause Online I Look Damn Good)) and it’s been amazing. I do have to pay the bills in the meantime of course. It’s been a long road and it isn’t over yet, but I know I will do it one day. All I know is one day my children will know how hard I worked to get what I wanted.

That makes it all worth it.
